Four-time world champion boxer Roberto Durán will make a special appearance at A&M-Commerce.

The boxing legend will conduct a talk-show-style interview, reflecting on his rise from poverty in Panama to the top of the boxing world. After the interview, Durán will answer audience questions and then take photos with attendees until 8 p.m.

A screening of “Roberto Durán: Beyond the Glory,” a documentary originally aired on Fox Sports Net, will play at 4 p.m. in the RSC Conference Rooms before the start of the main event. Guests are encouraged to arrive by 4:45 for the main event.

The event is free and only open to current A&M-Commerce students, faculty and staff. Attendees must show an active Lion Card for entry. Faculty and staff may each bring one non-university-affiliated guest.

About Roberto Durán:

Durán rose from poverty in Guararé, Panama, to become one of the world’s most famous professional boxers. Nicknamed “Manos de Piedra,” meaning “Hands of Stone,” Durán was infamous for his punishing punching power. He won world championships in four different weight classes over the course of his astounding career.

Durán retired from boxing in 2002 as only the second boxer to fight professionally across five decades. He won his first 31 professional fights in a row and finished with a career record of 103-16, with 70 of those wins coming by knockout. Durán was elected to the World Boxing Hall of Fame and the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2006 and 2007, respectively.

A Hollywood biopic of his life, “Hands of Stone,” was released in 2016, starring Edgar Ramirez as Durán and Robert De Niro as Ray Arcel, the legendary boxing trainer who worked with Durán for over a decade.
